When the Symantec Enterprise Firewall is configured for remote access (client-to-gateway) VPN using pre-shared key (PSK) authentication, it responds differently to valid and invalid usernames. This exposure could be used to determine if a guessed username is valid. It does not list valid usernames. It can only be used to identify if a given username exists.
Symantec Response and Workaround
Symantec engineers have verified this exposure. For the SGS 300/400 series products, enabling the "Dynamic VPN Client" feature and entering a pre-shared key will fix the problem. For all other products, adding an IKE-enabled network user named "default-ikeuser" and configuring it with a shared secret resolves the problem. This username is used for extended authentication to a separate authentication server. However, extended authentication is not needed for this workaround to be effective.
Symantec recommends that Symantec Enterprise Firewall administrators who are concerned about this exposure apply the appropriate workaround noted above.
As part of normal best practices, Symantec strongly recommends:
Restrict access to administration or management systems to privileged users.
Restrict remote access, if required, to trusted/authorized systems only.
Run under the principle of least privilege where possible to limit the impact of exploit by threats.
Keep all operating systems and applications updated with the latest vendor patches.
Follow a multi-layered approach to security. Run both firewall and anti-malware applications, at a minimum, to provide multiple points of detection and protection to both inbound and outbound threats.
Deploy network and host-based intrusion detection systems to monitor network traffic for signs of anomalous or suspicious activity. This may aid in detection of attacks or malicious activity related to exploitation of latent vulnerabilities
