This document describes the Protection Center restore workflow and provides the Best Practices information.
About Protection Center restore
Protection Center includes Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery for data and system backup, and recovery. You can configure a backup schedule to create weekly full backups and daily incremental backups of the Protection Center hard drive automatically. If a problem occurs within Protection Center, you can restore the backup image to the existing Protection Center appliance. For example, if the Protection Center hard drive fails, you can replace that hard drive and restore the backup image to the new drive.
To restore Protection Center, you need a Symantec Recovery Disk. This disk can be used to start the appliance and recover the Protection Center hard drive from the backups that you made. The Symantec Recovery Disk is available from the Symantec Fileconnect page and once downloaded can be used for recovery purposes.
About the Symantec Recovery disk
The Symantec Recovery Disk is a CD/DVD or an ISO image that you can use to start the appliance and recover the Protection Center hard drive from the backups that you made. You can download the ISO image from the Symantec FileConnect page at
To log in to FileConnect, you must have the serial number of a product that supports Protection Center. The Symantec Recovery Disk only needs access to the hard drive or network location that contains the Protection Center backup files. About backup files
When you restore Protection Center, you normally restore the most recent backup. However, if you consider the most recent backup unsuitable, you can also choose to restore from an earlier backup file. You can select the backup file with the Recover My Computer Wizard that is provided by the Symantec Recovery Disk. The following information should be considered when selecting the backup file:
- The <SPC appliance name>.sv2i file is the system backup file. Select it to restore the most recent backup.
- .v2i files are full backups.
- .iv2i files are incremental backups.
- If you restore from an incremental backup (an .iv2i file), all of the required earlier backup files are also restored.
Best Practices in the Protection Center restore
Ensuring that these Best Practices are followed will help the Restore process go smoothly:
- Store backup files in a shared network folder with Administrative access that is accessible from the SPC appliance to be restored.
- Ensure the backup file password is available (all backup files are password-protected).
- No external USB or eSATA devices should be connected to the appliance.
- The boot device sequence on the Protection Center appliance should boot to the CD/DVD first.
