How do I troubleshoot the new .NET version of the mail service in Notification Server 6 SP2?
Registry key information on how to save a copy of outgoing mail :
The String--HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\eXpress\AexMailQueue\SaveSentMail is set to false by default. If set to true (followed by restarting the Altiris Service) it will cause the mail queue to save a copy of every mail item deposited in the mail directory, into the folder specified in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\eXpress\AexMailQueue\SentMailDir. The SentMailDir folder will be a subfolder of the value stored in the MonitoredDir string.
- A common technique used to troubleshoot where the mail process is failing is to stop the mail service, run the process in question (Notification e-mail, Helpdesk ticket creation, etc), capture the resulting file, and then watch the queue as the service is enabled. Where the failure occurred, or if it appears to go through, tells us a great deal on where the failure is occurring.
If you set the PauseActivies registry setting, the mail queue will be paused and it will not send any mail (i.e. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\eXpress\Notification Server\PauseActivities = 1)
Does the new .NET version still have SMTPlogging to see the commands issued to the SMTP server by the queue? If so, where does it log it?
The string registry value called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\eXpress\AexMailQueue\SMTPLogging = true | false controls SMTP logging. If this reg value is created and is given a value of true the mail Q will created a file called SMTPLog.log in the same directory as the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\eXpress\AexMailQueue\MonitoredDir directory.
