Question
How can you change the installation path for the Altiris Agent?

Environment

ITMS 8.0, 8.1, 8.5, 8.6

Resolution

Answer

There are many ways to do this. Here will be presented the two most common ways.

Note: In either case, do not use the root of any drive as a removal (uninstall) of the Altiris Agent because it can cause the removal all other files on the drive as well as the agent files.

Method 1

You can use the AeXNSC.exe file located at C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86\NS Client Package. There are some arguments that you can use for installing the Altiris Agent pointing to the proper Server name as well specifying where it has to be installed. For details of those arguments, see article KB 179495, "AeXNSC Command Line Arguments."

Usually this method requires a script or some type of manual installation. For example:

  1. From the client computer, browse to the \\servername\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86\NS Client Package and find the AeXNSC.exe file.
  2. Drag the executable to your RUN prompt and add the following arguments after the AeXNSC.exe file (this Z:/ is an example):

    \\servername\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86\NS Client Package\AeXNSC.exe -a ns="<servername>.<yourdomain>.com" nsweb=http://<servername>.<yourdomain>.com/Altiris/ path="Z:\Program Files\Altiris\Altiris Agent" /s

  3. Run it, and it should install the Altiris Agent pointing to the Notification Server and install it to the Z:/ drive path.

Method 2

The other way that may work for you is to go to Settings >Agents/Plug-ins >Symantec Management Agent > Settings> Agent Install. Choose the computers that you want to install the Altiris Agent, then click on the Default Settings button and go to Agent Install Settings tab, find the section for Override the default installation path and add the path where you want the Altiris Agent folder. It should be something like Z:\Program Files\Altiris.
