Upgrading to Encryption Desktop from PGP Desktop 9.x for Windows
Starting with PGP Desktop 9.12, here are the major versions that have been released:
If a client is currently running PGP Desktop 9.12, to upgrade to Encryption Desktop 10.4.x it is first necessary to upgrade to a 10.1.x version of PGP Desktop. After upgrading to version 10.1.x, it is then possible to upgrade to 10.4.x.
Existing keyrings and PGP Virtual Disks are usable in upgraded versions.
Rebooting after each upgrade
After each upgrade, by default the system will be rebooted. It is vital that the reboot occurs. Upgrading a system and not rebooting the system between versions is not recommended or supported and could lead to data loss. Once a system has been upgraded, please reboot as soon as possible to ensure the system is properly upgraded. For example, upgrading from 9.12 to 10.4.x, these are the steps performed:
- Upgrade 9.12 to 10.1.x
- Upgrade 10.1.x to 10.4.x

There is no direct upgrade path for PGP Desktop 8.x or below. Decrypt the drive, backup keyrings and uninstall before installing Encryption Desktop 10.x. Existing keyrings and PGP Virtual Disks will be usable in the new release.
