Because the 3Com TFTP Server is limited in it's ability to distribute a Windows PE PXE package, the following describes know how to configure the 3rd party TFTPD32 software to work with Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5.
Download TFTPD32 from here. Install the product with all default values and then proceed with the scenario below: This allows you to use your existing DHCP server and 3Com PXE Server with TFTPD32.exe to deliver the PXE Windows PE package.
To start the process, use the Ghost Boot Wizard to create a WinPE TCP/IP Network Boot Image. Make sure the files are stored in the C:\TFTPBOOT folder. Once the pacakage has been created, copy bootmgr.exe from C:\TFTPBOOT\BOOT to C:\TFTPBOOT.
Click Edit and then click Add Host to open the Edit Host window.
Provide the information as follows:
Name: This is the computer name of the client computer, or host computer. If you don't want to specify a particular computer name, click the box to "Use node for name"
Node: Specify the MAC address of the client computer that should use the PXE menu. If you want to specify multiple computers based on MAC addresses, you can use a question mark as a wildcard character. For example, if one computer's MAC address is 123456889988 and another is 123456852963, notice that the first 6 digits are the same. Using the MAC address of 123456?????? in the Node field would allow both machines to connect to use the PXE package. This will work as long as there are no other BootPTab host entries that exactly match the MAC address of the computers. You can also use all wildcards (???????????) to allow all of your clients to receive the PXE package.
IP #: Do not use this box.
Image: Type the information as follows exactly as follows: /boot/pxeboot.n12
Click OK. The entry should be reflected on the Hosts tab.
Click on File, and Save.
Close the BootPTab Editor.
Next, configure the settings in the TFTPD32 server. To do this, click the "Settings" button in the bottom center of the screen. Configure your settings to match those that are listed in the attached screen shot called settings1.jpg. In the latest TFTPD32 version, tabs are used instead of sections and "Base Directory" has been replaced with "Current Directory" in the opening screen.
Close the TFTPD32 server
Open the 3Com PXE Server
Open the TFPTD32 Server
Note: Symantec successfully tested this process with no DHCP Scope options configured for PXE. In some cases, though, you may need to configure option 66 on your DHCP server before the Windows PE package can be successfully delivered to the client.
Once you've created the TCP/IP Network Boot Image using the Ghost Boot Wizard and configured the TFTPD32 software as directed above, you're ready to distribute your Windows PE package to your client machines. Leave the TFTPD32 software running and then boot your client machines via the Network Interface Card (NIC).
