Ghost Solution Suite

Issue/Introduction

You want to know if Ghost Solution Suite will work to capture and restore an image of a server using a RAID array.

Resolution

The following guidelines should be used to determine whether or not Ghost will work with your RAID controller:

  1. Symantec Ghost Solution Suite can only be used to capture and restore images from hardware RAID arrays.
  2. As long as the Pre OS sees the RAID array as a normal disk (a single independent drive of the correct size), Ghost should be able to capture and restore images of the array. This is true for hardware RAID arrays and software RAID arrays.
    • Note that Symantec does not support cloning software RAID arrays, even if the disk is seen as a single independent disk in Ghost. In some cases, you may have to break the software RAID array before Ghost can capture or restore an image.
  3. Images captured from a RAID array contain no data that they came from a RAID array. As a result, Symantec Ghost can restore an image taken from a single disk to a RAID array (provided the conditions above are met) or take an image from a RAID array and restore it to a single disk (again, provided the conditions above are met).
  4. Deploy Anywhere is compatible with hardware RAID arrays only provided the conditions above are met. Deploy Anywhere is not compatible with Software RAID arrays.
