Cause

Messaging Gateway is running on a platform without enough RAM allocated. As antispam / antivirus ruleset sizes and software memory requirements increase. SMG can briefly exceed 60% swap utilization on low memory platforms during some operations, especially when running in the Control Center + Scanner "combo box" configuration.

Resolution

Increase the RAM memory size to over 16GB on the virtualization host to match the best practice recommended. Please monitor swap usage. Under normal conditions SMG should only use minimal amount of swap memory or not at all. If the SMG still shows large use of swap memory after increasing RAM memory, please increase the memory further until this behavior ceases. Memory usage of up to 30GB has been observed. Please ensure that all allocated memory is reserved in the virtualization host.
