Question: Is it safe to change the Symantec Management Platform (SMP) server's IP address after a complete installation? This is especially important to know when it is in a production environment, with a large number of clients reporting back events and inventory.
Communication between SMP and its clients is based on the FQDN of the server, so changing the IP address should not be a problem as long as DNS records are updated and all clients can get through to your SMP server (using FQDN).
To verify you have a match, you may want to run "nslookup" and/or "dig" command (on different Servers & computers) and compare the resulting hostname to DNS-resolved name.
It is recommended to search through registry on the SMP server and check for IP address saved under Altiris.
e.g. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Altiris Agent\Inventory\IP address
" If the IP Address is changing for your server, but it is the same server name, DNS should resolve it."
