Issue/Introduction

The purpose of this article is to provide a brief explanation on the differences between the BMC firmware and the Hardware Diagnostics software. Symantec has implemented the ability to upgrade the Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) firmware for the S500, S400 and S200 series motherboards as part of the hardware diagnostics.

Resolution

Each Hardware Diagnostics software contains the BMC firmware as well as other tools used for diagnostic purposes. Both the Hardware Diagnostics version and BMC version can be upgraded independently by following article 169399. The current BMC version can be found in the ProxySG or ASG Sysinfo section called "IPMI00". The only way to see the current Hardware Diagnostics is by accessing the appliance through serial console and  have to look during boot-up using a CLI or running the following CLI commands.

To check if the Customer Hardware Diagnostics are present on the appliance

From the CLI, enter:

ProxySG> en
ProxySG# show diagnostic-systems

The output from this command indicates that a version of Customer Hardware Diagnostics code is present.
Please see 170602 for the latest BMC versions.
