(Also, note that Microsoft has identified an issue with WMI on certain server class operating systems and we believe it may be related to the Server 2003 and Vista WMI issue we are encountering. This error is especially noted for the win32_QuickFixEngineering class but could be related to any WMI query. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/279225)
This issue has been resolved within Inventory Solution for Windows 6.1 SP3. Please refer to the KB article ID 47270 "Inventory Solution for Windows 6.1 SP3 Release Notes" for further information.
Development has performed testing and found that changing the WMI queries to use the 'sync' option, as shown below, resulted in no errors occurring on Vista machines. We believe it is also true for Windows Server 2003.
1. On the Notification server, open the file \Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\NSCap\Bin\Win32\X86\Inventory Solution\AexCustInvStd.cit with notepad.
2. Modify ALL WMI queries in your custom inventory source files by adding the 'sync:' option as shown here:
<%foreach wmiobject="o" namespace="root\CIMV2" wql=" sync:select * from Win32_QuickFixEngineering"%>
3. Be sure to do an "Update Distribution Points" on the Inventory Agent Package, so the server is aware of the change to the file.
* To update distribution points, go to Tasks > Assets and Inventory > Windows > Inventory Tasks > Hardware Inventory and click on Go To Package in the General tab. This will open a new window. Go to the bottom of this new window and click Update Distribution Points.
If you are experiencing this issue and you are NOT doing a WMI query in your custom inventory, please contact Symantec technical support and inform us.
