Issue/Introduction

401.1 Unauthorized error while accessing the console from the Notification Server using an alias name. If you access the console using IP, Hostname, FQDN or Loopback it works fine. Remote machines can also access the console using the alias name without getting the error.

Environment

ITMS 7.x, 8.x

Cause

This problem occurs because a security feature named loop back check functionality.

Resolution

 Disable the authentication loopback check

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
  3. Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  7. Exit Registry Editor.
  8. Restart the computer.

Note You may have to restart the server for this change to take effect but I did not have to with the Server 2008 R2 machine I was working on.
