Issue/Introduction

After January 2020 Microsoft is providing only Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 and Server 2008.

After October 2023 Microsoft ended extended support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2, and no longer makes updates for these operating systems available with the exception of extended security updates, which can be purchased on a subscription basis from Microsoft.

These updates will only be available by subscription

Environment

Patch Management Solution 8.x

Cause

Microsoft Windows product versions have reached EOL.

Resolution

Extended security updates for Windows7, Windows Server 2008/R2, Windows Server 2012/R2 are not included in the standard Windows patch management data feed that is part of the Patch Management Solution.  This means that the standard Windows patch management data feed will not identify extended security updates applicable to those EOL platform version computers.

The extended security updates are included in an enhanced Windows patch management data feed available to customers who purchase extended patch management support Windows Server 2012/R2 from Broadcom.  This means that the enhanced Windows patch management data feed can be used to identify extended security updates applicable to Windows Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 platform computers, install such updates and report on compliance regarding those updates.

In order to use the Patch Management Solution to distribute extended security updates for Windows Server 2012/R2, you must purchase an extended security update subscription for each server from Microsoft.  In addition, you must purchase extended patch management support from Broadcom.  While Microsoft's support is priced on a per server basis, Broadcom's extended support is priced on a per customer basis.  The number of Windows Server 2012/R2 computers is not relevant for purposes of extended support from Broadcom.

For more information on purchasing extended patch management support for Windows Server 2012/R2 from Broadcom, contact your Broadcom account director or your Broadcom partner.

The default Patch Management Solution data feed doesn't include extended support updates for EOL Microsoft Windows versions.

As alternative, customers of IT Management Suite, Server, Client Management Suite and Server Management Suite can use the Managed Software Delivery functionality as a workaround to install extended support updates obtained from Microsoft extended security update subscription.
