Occasionally the Ghost\PXE server exhibits problems that can be traced to corrupt or missing files in the Bootwiz and/or WAIK directories.

Generally, the corruption is cuased by antivirus software. For best results with the repair, please temporarily uninstall antivirus software first.

This article describes the process of rebuilding these directories.

Solution

1) Before we start, let's take a backup of the server and backup the following files:

.\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Bootwiz\platforms\Winpe5\x64\Drivers\CUSTOM
.\Program Files (x64)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Bootwiz\platforms\Winpe5\x64\Drivers\CUSTOM
.\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Images
.\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\express.exe
.\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Licenses

2) Delete the Bootwiz and WAIK directories from the eXpress share. The Bootwiz directory contains all of the installed automation operating systems (Linux, DOS and WinPE) that the PXE Configuration Utility uses to create automation boot images.

3) From the DSSetup directory (usually found at the root of the hard drive where Deployment Server was installed) run the program called DataStor.exe.

4) Copy the backup files back to the eXpress share before starting the Deployment Server console again.

5) Edit the PREBootOS.ini file found in .\Program Files\Altiris\eXpress\Deployment Server\Bootwiz

       scroll down to locate the Winpe version and architecture and change value of Installed=True  to Installed=False

6) Reimport WinPE, DOS and/or Linux files into the PXE Configuration Utility by clicking on the "Add pre-boot" button when editing or creating new PXE configurations. 

    When the WinPE files are reimported, a new WAIK directory will be created and populated.

    NOTE:  Uninstallation \ reinstallation of the ADK maybe needed before importing

7) Create new WinPE, DOS and/or Linux automation configurations as needed.
