Inventory policies are not designed to run as soon as a policy is received by a newly managed machine. Typically the policy will wait until the scheduled time to run, which depending upon environment could be a week or more from when the newly managed machine first checks into the Notification Server.
There however is a method that can allow machines to report inventory within a few hours of joining the Notification Server. This method will require a new inventory policy, and a target created by two filters.
Navigate to Manage > Policies > Discovery and Inventory > Inventory
Right Click the existing "Collect Full Inventory" and click Clone. This will create a policy called "Copy of Collect Full Inventory"
Select what types of inventory to be collected. Please note: Selecting only "Hardware and operating system" will improve performance, and run time of the collection, if software inventory is not required immediately.
Modify the schedule to include the desired run time. While the inventory cannot be set to run hourly, multiple times can be input to run daily, to simulate this.
Please note: Symantec does not recommend running inventory more than once a day, as this can impact console performance. If inventory is needed to be collected more often, slowly add run times to the schedule, and monitor the Notification Server for performance issues.
Create the target by clicking on "Applied To" and then clicking "Computers". The following windows will need to be configured with 2 filters. First filter "Computers with Inventory Plug-in" will be set to "exclude computers not in". The second "Computer with inventory data" will be set to "Exclude Computers in".
These two rules in conjunction will bring up any computer that has an inventory agent installed, but has not reported in its inventory. Upon reporting inventory, the next time the resource membership runs, and updates the filters and target, it will remove the computer from the policy.
Please note: Running this method of inventory collection can cause performance issues, especially if a large amount of new computers are joining the Notification Server. This method is intended for an environment where a handful of computers may be being brought in at a time, and for reporting purposes, inventory is needed as soon as possible.
