How to map additional drives automatically using bootable media with Ghost Standard Tools 3.x

Environment

Ghost Standard Tools 3.x

Resolution

This article provides step-by-step instructions for automatically creating mapped drives for imaging using Ghost Standard Tools 3.x. This powerful and simple method is used as the primary method of deployment by some Ghost users. Please note that these instructions are for the Boot Disk Creator (Bootwiz.exe) that is part of Ghost Solution Suite 3.x Standard Tools, which is a separate installation from the Ghost Solution Suite Console.

Boot media created by this process will also work as stand-alone boot media, such as USB-connected imaging.

This article assumes you have already installed the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit for Windows 10/11.

1. Browse to \Program Files (x86)\Symantec\Ghost\Bootwiz and double-click BootWiz.exe.

2. The Boot Disk creator will launch. If a "Welcome to the Boot Disk Creator" pop-up launches, click the radio button for "Go to the Boot Disk Creator interface" and then click OK. Otherwise go to the next step.

3. Choose File > New Configuration.

4. On the screen "Step 1 of 5: Configuration Name", provide a name (and description, if you wish) and select "Windows PE 10/11" from the drop-down for "Pre-boot Operating System for this Configuration" menu. For OEM Extensions, select "<all>". Then click Next.

5.On the screen "Step 2 of 5: Windows PE Hardware Device Drivers", click Next.

6. On the screen "Step 3 of 5: TCP/IP Protocol Settings", click Next.

7. On the screen "Step 4 of 5 Optional Components", click Next.

8. On the screen "Step 5 of 5: Configuration Summary", click Finish.

9. You will now be back at the Boot Disk Creator Window, and the configuration you made will be visible in the left pane under "Configurations".

10. Under your named configuration, locate the item "Startup.bat" and click on it. In the right-hand pane, you will see an editable text document. Under the line "cd \ghost", make a new line and type the following:

net use T: \\servername\C$\foldername /user:username password

An explanation of the above command: It will name the folder (foldername) in the C$ share on the remote server (servername) to T: in WinPE. Please note that T is just a suggestion for the drive letter, and is not to be used if there is already a mapped drive T on the network. It will connect with the credentials specified. More info from can be found from Microsoft. Please note that multiple drives may be mapped, but each will need a distinct letter not already in use.

11. Click File > Save Text File.

12. Right-click your configuration, then click Create Boot Disk.

13. Select boot media type (you can create an ISO, or write directly to a USB flash disk). Choose Network Boot. Then set "Boot media processor type" to either x86 or x64. Then click Next. This will start the Boot Disk Creator creating the boot image, which will take several minutes.

14. When that completes, click Close.

15. If you wrote directly to a flash drive, you are now finished. If you created an ISO file, it will need to be burned to a CD, DVD, or converted to bootable USB flash drive.
