How can I provide a way to accelerate the check in intervals for newly managed computers.
Note: This technique should only be used on large NS environments that have been fully deployed (90% of agents have already been deployed for > 30 days). Accelerating agent check-in times on a new NS environment will cause an excessive load that could overwhelm the NS with increased traffic.
Answer The resource update summary table tracks the first time an Altiris Agent sends its Basic Inventory. This is used in the supplied collections to determine the age of each managed computer. By default this collection has been set to include computers which are 30 days or newer. If a shorter time frame is desired, edit the New Arrivals collection in the SQL portion. Change 30 to X where X is the desired number of days.
Import the attached xml file (Age based collections folder.xml) into the NS Console under Resources > Computer Collections.
It will create a new folder "Age based collections" with three collections inside the folder
Go to the Configuration tab > Altiris Agent > Altiris Agent Configuration
Clone the existing Altiris Agent policy (All Desktops) and assign the New Arrivals collection to it.
Rename the policy to "New Arrivals agent policy"
Set the check-in interval to 1 hr
Edit the two original agent configuraiton policies: All Desktops computers (excluding 'Package Servers') and All Windows Servers (excluding 'Package Servers')
Change their collections to Long Term Desktops and Long Term Servers respectively. Set their check-in interval to 4 to 6 hours.
