In addition to the error, inbound email may be filtered according to the default policy instead of the LDAP-based policy group settings. The distribution lists are also not expanded.
This error is caused when there is a failure looking up the indicated email address in the Directory Data Service, using the Address Resolution function. The Directory Data Service server may be unavailable, or the LDAP source is unavailable, or the LDAP source may have returned an unexpected result. The other errors either in the Brightmail Engine log or the Directory Data Service log may provide more information about the cause of this issue.
If there is a problem connecting to the DDS server, the following error appears in the Brightmail Engine log:
 DDS client:ulxr::ConnectionException caught - [-32400] Could not
This error message also displays the reason for the error, such as Connection refused along with the IP address and host name of the server.
Resolve the network issue, or restart the DDS server as needed. Use the service command from the Command Line Interface, or check the status on the Status > Hosts > Software and Services page of the Control Center.
If the DDS server itself encounters an error, consult the DDS log to determine the root cause, and take the appropriate steps to resolve it. You may use the various Test Query buttons on the Edit Directory Data Source page to assist troubleshooting.
