Malloc error while attempting to allocate memory
Error code: 10013
Error text: Malloc error while attempting to allocate memory
Affected module: brightmail_client, brightmail_engine, conduit, and jlu_controller
Following are the symptoms of this error message:
The appliance may process mails exceedingly slowly
Inbound and outbound mail queues may back up and eventually the incoming mail may be rejected with errors
Specified error in the logs that potentially accompanies other warnings and errors
The Symantec Brightmail Gateway appliance is starved for sufficient usable memory. One or more aspects of appliance functionality is unable to execute correctly because it needs a larger chunk of memory than is currently available. The appliance may start returning this error when the Hardware Status page still indicates a reasonable amount of memory free if that free memory is heavily fragmented (There is not a single free address space large enough for the requested operation).
Ascertain the amount of reported free memory for your appliance:
Log into the Control Center.
Click Status > Hosts > Hardware Status.
The Total Memory and Free Memory are listed in the table.
To resolve this issue, perform any of the following tasks:
In situations where the memory is heavily fragmented and if you have a multi-scanner installation, you can restart the Brightmail Engine and the MTA.
If this appliance is a VMware-based installation, you may need to allocate additional memory to the installation.
If you use a content policy that makes use of a very large Record Resource on your systems total memory, you may need to upgrade to a system with more available memory or reduce the size of the record resource.
Add an additional scanner to your installation and balance the load of the mail traffic between your scanners.
Lower the maximum message size that your MTA accepts to minimize utilization of large blocks of memory.
If you are running Symantec Brightmail Gateway 8.0.0 or 8.0.1, you must upgrade to at least version 8.0.2. A defect that can lead to this error is corrected in Symantec Brightmail Gateway 8.0.2 version.
