How to remove email folders created in Microsoft Exchange by Symantec Email Submission Client (SESC)

Typically the SESC console is used to remove any spam submission email folders created by SESC. This is the recommended procedure. If the product is not functioning it is possible to remove the folders manually.
Using the SESC console to remove folders
1. Open the SESC console. 2. Use the following steps to remove entire Exchange servers from SESC.
a. Click the Exchange Servers pane. b. Highlight the Exchange server to remove and click the Remove or Remove All button.
3. Use the following steps to remove only certain groups, OUs, domains from SESC.
a. Click the Enable Users pane. b. Change the selected domain if appropriate. c. To select specific users instead of all users choose Customize Submission Mode in the Select submission type dropdown. d. Use the Add OU, Add Group and Add Filter buttons to limit the users that SESC monitors.
NOTE: Any users not selected have the folders removed from their Exchange settings.
4. Apply changes and configure SESC to perform an immediate update.
a. Click the System Update pane. b. Click the checkbox next to Root in the Select Servers tree selection. c. Click the Update button.
Remove folders manually
NOTE: Do not use this process if SESC is running.
This process uses a stand alone tool to remove the SESC-created folders. A text file containing a list of SMTP addresses is used by the tool as input. The SMTP address is used to find the user in Exchange. The tool then determines if SESC has created a folder for that user. If so, the folder is deleted. If no folders have been created by SESC then nothing is deleted.
NOTE: When SESC creates folders they folders are set with a unique property that indicates it was created by SESC. Therefore SESC will not remove folders with the same name that were not created by SESC.
1. Download and extract the ZIP file sescfolderremoval.zip to the SESC computer. 2. Generate a list of SMTP addresses to remove folders from.
There are two ways of generating this list: 1) use the folder list cached by SESC or 2) generate a list of all SMTP addresses directly from Exchange.
Use folder list cached by SESC
a. Open a command prompt and CD to the directory where the downloaded files are extracted. b. Run the tool like this:
NOTE: Double quotes must be used when there is a space in the path.
Generate a list of all SMTP addresses
a. On an Exchange server open the Exchange Management Shell. b. Run the following command to write the SMTP addresses to a text file:
get-mailbox | select primarysmtpaddress | ft -hide > c:\temp\smtp.txt
NOTE: The above command gets the list of every user's SMTP address. If you wish to limit the list of mailboxes pass additional parameters to the get-mailbox command. See the following articles for more details:
3. Configure the folder removal tool configuration file.
a. Open the file config.xml in an editor. b. Change the node <Uri> to the value of a Microsoft Exchange Client Access Server URL. See the following article for assistance with this URL: How to determine the URL of the Microsoft Exchange Server in the Client Access Service Role for use with Symantec Email Submission Client (SESC). c. Change the node <User> to the Windows account name of an account with Microsoft Exchange impersonation permissions. If the SESC service account is still active this can be used. This name is without the domain information. For example, enter administrator instead of 2k8domain\adminstrator. d. Change the node <Password> to the password of the account entered previously. e. Change the node <Domain> to the domain of the Windows account entered previously. f. Change the node <SubmissionFolder> to the name of the SESC spam submission folder. g. Save the file and exit the editor.
The following is an example of a configured XML file:
