Question

How do I change the DS or GSS Server's IP Address? How will the clients connect if the IP Address for the server needs to change?

Environment

Resolution

Answer

Here's the steps to change DS\GSS Server IP address:

1) Redirect existing Dagents to new Server IP.

If the IP address of the GSS server has not yet changed you can roll out the IP address change to the clients with the console. If the IP has already changed your clients will not be able to connect and therefore you need to reinstall the client on all the machines, or change the agent settings in each client one at a time.

If the server IP has not yet changed here are the steps to prepare your clients to connect to the server once it is changed:

  • Open the GSS Console, Right-click on 'All Computers' and select 'Change Agent Settings'
  • Select the 'Production Agent > Server connection tab'
  • Change the IP address to the new IP address of the server (this will cause lost agent connectivity until the server IP is changed)
  • Click 'OK'
    • All Dagents will receive the job and disconnect to make changes, they will reconnect when the necessary IP address change is made to the Server.
    • Allow enough time for all clients to update with this new IP address before making the IP address change on the Server.

2) Change the default IP address for new clients.

  • Open the GSS console
  • Click Tools - Options - Agent Settings
  • In the Production Agent Settings section Check the box "Force new agents to take these default settings"
  • Click Change Default settings
  • Change the IP address on the Server Connection tab, click OK
  • In the Automation Agent Settings section Check the box "Force new agents to take these default settings"
  • Click Change Default settings
  • Change the IP address on the Server Connection tab, click OK, then OK again.

3) Open Windows services, turn off all Altiris Services

4) Change Server IP address

5) Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\Express\Deployment, edit default.cfg with notepad.

Perform a 'Find' old IP address and 'Replace' with new IP address.

6) Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Altiris\Express\Deployment\PXE, edit PXE.ini, PxeManager.ini, and RPC.ini with notepad.

Perform a 'Find' old IP address and 'Replace' with new IP address.

7) Restart all Altiris Services

8) Edit PXE boot image to contain new server IP:

  • In the Console, select 'Tools > PXE Configuration'
  • Highlight your PXE boot image (Winpe/Linux) and select 'Edit...'
  • Select 'Edit Boot Image...' and then '<<Edit' on the bottom left
  • Go through the Wizard and verify the new IP address of the Server
  • Finish the Boot image > Click OK > Save changes then close out the PXE Configuration Utility

9) Test PXE on new Subnet\VLAN

Note:
If the IP Address has changed and access to the DAgent UI is not possible, you can change manually on each client machine the "TcpAddr" regkey under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\Client Service".
