How to install IT Analytics or Symantec Endpoint Protection Integration Component and their pre-requisites onto a new Altiris server
Last Updated April 08, 2013
You have downloaded the Altiris IT Analytics (ITA) or Symantec Endpoint Protection Integration Component (SEPIC) installer or trialware from the Internet or a product CD. You want to know how to install this.
Symantec does not offer separate installers or trialware versions of Altiris products, such as for ITA and SEPIC. An "installer or trialware" file is sometimes distributed to customers, such as SEPIC can be found on Symantec Endpoint Protection CDs, but which is actually the Symantec Installation Manager, needed to install the Symantec Management Platform before any Altiris products can be installed.
The following instructions provide basic guidelines on how to install an Altiris product from an install file, which requires many pre-requisites before being able to actually use the product. Note: These instructions are not necessarily ITA or SEPIC-specific and can be applied to any Altiris installer or trialware, as they are all the Symantec Installation Manager (SIM) and require the same pre-requisites.
Pre-requisite: The Symantec Management Platform server and Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
Most Altiris products require the Symantec Management Platform (SMP) server and are not stand-alone. For example, both ITA and SEPIC require the SMP. The SMP itself requires several pre-requisites before it can be installed:
Dedicated physical or virtual server running Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit running IIS, including at least the minimum required amount of system RAM and processors. Further information about what is required for a Windows Server can be found here:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. If ITA is to be installed, the SQL Server also needs to have SQL Server Analysis Service (SSAS), SQL Server Reporting Service (SSRS) and IIS installed.
Note: This article does not go further into how to install the SMP or SQL Server. The user should instead refer to the above documentation or contact their network or DBA administrators for further assistance. In general, Symantec Technical Support is unable to guide the user though installing any of the above except for specific Altiris products. If the user needs to have extended assistance for installing these (the SMP, SQL Server, etc.), they may wish to contact Professional Services, who can be reached through Sales.
Symantec Installation Manager
Copy the SIM.exe file (its name may vary but is generally SymantecInstallationManager.exe or SIM.exe) to the new SMP 7.1 server, as configured according to the prior section's pre-requisites, and while logged in as a domain administrator, run it.
Follow the on-screen instructions for installing SIM.
Symantec Management Platform Server
In SIM, click on the "Install new products" link.
Click on the Filter: Suites button and change it to None.
The current version of the Symantec Management Platform 7.1 should appear on the list. Click to select it for downloading. Note: While it is possible to select this and any desired products to simultaneously install, it is recommended to install and ensure it works, the SMP first before installing any products into it.
Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the SMP. Once finished, the SMP Console becomes available.
In SIM, follow the prior section's steps 1 through 2.
Click to select any desired products, such as ITA or SEPIC. Likewise, Suites can be left as the list choice, and suites such as Client Management Suite can be selected instead, which will install a suite of specific products.
Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the desired products. Once finished, these appear in their respective areas in the SMP Console.
Further Product Configuration
After any desired products are installed, many need to be specially configured before they can be used, especially ITA. Refer to the product's user guide and Symantec Knowledge Base for more information. For example:
