Symantec Encryption Desktop's (SED) Boot Guard functions slightly different than Windows. Please familiarize yourself with the following If you are defaulted to use the US International keyboard in Windows, you will be defaulted to the US International keyboard when you encrypt the disk using SED. You will then need to keep in mind the functions of certain special characters uniquely used in the US International keyboard.
Creating international characters
When you press the APOSTROPHE ( ' ) key, QUOTATION MARK ( " ) key, ACCENT GRAVE ( ` ) key, TILDE ( ~ ) key, or ACCENT CIRCUMFLEX,. also called the CARET key, ( ^ ) key, nothing is displayed on the screen until you press a second key:
If you press one of the letters designated as eligible to receive an accent mark, the accented version of the letter appears.
If you press the key of a character that is not eligible to receive an accent mark, two separate characters appear.
SED Bootguard will not function as described in the line item above. Spacebar must be used to allow the character to appear properly. If you use the APOSTROPHE ( ' ) key, QUOTATION MARK ( " ) key, ACCENT GRAVE ( ` ) key, TILDE ( ~ ) key, or ACCENT CIRCUMFLEX,. also called the CARET key, ( ^ ) key in your passphrase, SED Bootguard will not show that key until you press the spacebar or enter one of the letters that create the International characters. Those letters are: c, e, y, u, i, o, a
If your passphrase is: P@ssw0r'd and you are using the US International Keyboard. Windows will recognize that the Apostrophe was pressed and was not followed by c, e, y, u, i, o, a and will enter both the apostrophe and the 'd' together.
In SED Bootguard you will need to press F3 to allow your passphrase characters to appear. Then you will have to enter your passprhase as P@ssw0'<spacebar>d The spacebar will unhide the Apostrophe so you can enter the 'd' Please keep in mind that the spacebar is used for simplicity. Any character pressed following Apostrophe will allow the Apostrophe or other eligible key to appear.
