Question How do I customize software inventory using filescan.rule and aex-filesurveyor in NS7?
Answer The filescan.rule file is used by software inventory agent on UNIX/Linux/Mac platforms to collect information about installed applications. A filescan.rule file with default settings is included in the inventory agent installation package for each platform.
Customers may need to customize/update this file to include additional applications that should be reported by software inventory.
Please note the following regarding the filescan.rule file in NS7:
The file format didn't change from 6.2, so old customized files can be used.
aex-filesurveyor tool can be used to create custom records in the filescan.rule file. The surveyor was ported from 6.2 to 7.0. During the inventory installation on a client, a link in /usr/bin directory is created for this tool so it may be launched from any directory without specifying the path to the executable.
Customers can create a SWD task to redistribute filescan.rule from NS server to all UNIX/Linux/Mac clients. The folder where the filescan.rule file should be copied is:
A more universal method of specifying this path, which is supported in cases of custom installation directories, is:
`aex-helper info path -s INVENTORY`/etc/
