With the VIP Access app release in October 2018, VIP Access Mobile and VIP Access Desktop for Mac no longer support the proximity feature. Users that have not paired VIP Access with VIP Access Desktop for Mac will not be able to pair their VIP Access app going forward. Existing proximity pairings will continue to work, but will not receive support or updates.
What was the proximity feature?
VIP Proximity allows users of an Android or iOS mobile device to lock or unlock their Mac laptop/workstation using Bluetooth technology. With the touch of a button, users can approve the Symantec-verified request on their mobile device, instantly completing the sign-in and unlocking the device.
Why did we do this?
Due to a shift in priorities, Symantec made the decision to end support of this feature. However, as new requirements, use cases, and technologies arises, we may revisit this feature in the future.
What does this mean to me?
If you have not used or paired the proximity feature, you will not be able to pair your VIP Access app going forward.
If you have already paired your VIP Access apps, the existing pairing will not be affected. You can continue to use the proximity feature in the same way you do now. However, the proximity feature is no longer supported, so future changes to your mobile device or computer operating systems may break this functionality. Additionally, if you unpair VIP Access for any reason, you will not be able to pair it again.
Which versions of the VIP Access apps are affected?
This change affects all VIP Access for Mobile apps starting with v4.2.4 (iOS) and v4.1.3 (Android).
Can I continue to use an older version of the VIP Access app to continue to use the proximity feature?
VIP Access for Mobile apps v4.2.4 (iOS) and v4.1.3 (Android) contain a mandatory update for certificate pinning. Without this update, some features of your VIP Access app may stop functioning before the end of the year.
