Issue/Introduction

Why is logging into Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager producing the error: "Failed to connect to the server. Verify that the server name and port are correct."

Symptoms
This error has more than one potential cause:

  1. The name/port entered into the console are incorrect.
  2. You are using the Remote Console, and the version of Java installed on the system is not compatible with the Remote Console.
  3. The name entered into the console is not able to be resolved to the correct computer.
  4. The SEPM console itself cannot connect to the Database.
  5. The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service is not started.

Resolution

Solutions provided as per cause:

  1. Verify the correct server name/port entered into the console and try again.
  2. Java version 1.4 and earlier are not supported and will need to be upgraded. java version 1.5 and later are supported for the Remote Console. However, for compatibility with 1.6, the SEPM must be RU6 or later.
  3. Verify that the network can properly resolve the name of the computer running the manager. If not, fix the name resolution issues on the network or enter in the manager IP address instead.
  4. Verify that the network can properly resolve the name of the computer running the Database if it is not hosted on the SEPM server. If the database is unavailable or cannot be accessed, you cannot log in.
  5. Try to start the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service in Service Control Manager. Verify that it stays started. If not, reference the following document for further troubleshooting:

Technical Information
The Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service not staying started most commonly indicates a port conflict or an issue with IIS settings/permissions. The linked document can provide logs to indicate root cause.
