How To Determine What Sequence of AntiVirus Definitions a Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 Client is Using
Last Updated January 18, 2011
Symantec's Security Response has replied that a file submitted to them contains a genuine threat and that it is now detected and repaired with the latest available definitions. Their email includes the sequence number of antivirus definitions which added protection against this new threat. How can an end user check if the definitions on their SEP 11 client has this sequence number or above?
Antivirus definition information is displayed in a human-friendly format in SEP 11's user interface. Versions are displayed (for instance) as "03 August 2008 r20" rather than by a sequence number. To view what the corresponding sequence number is, click Help and Support, Troubleshooting...., Versions. In the Definitions section, look for Definitions Pattern and read the Seq Data column.
Any sequence above that stated by Symantec Security Response will include protection. Several new sequences are released every day as definitions are updated to defend against new threats.
Best practice calls for SEP 11 clients to update their protection with the certified definitions available daily from LiveUpdate. These thoroughly-tested daily updates include protection against all threats known at the time when the definitions were created.
