When pcAnywhere is uninstalled, it resets a registry key that disables DCOM services.
Symptoms Applications that require DCOM services to communicate will fail to connect to a remote system. Some examples of this are Microsoft Remote Assistance and Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery.
As part of the uninstall process, DCOM is disabled in earlier versions of pcAnywhere. However, it is not uninstalled.
This is a known issue and has been resolved in the latest versions of pcAnywhere, such as pcAnywhere box version 12.5 with SP1, SP2, and SP3. In the Solution version of pcAnywhere, this issue is resolved in version 7.1 SP2.
If DCOM services are required on your computer after the uninstall of pcAnywhere, the following modifications can be made to re-enable DCOM:
Deploy or manually install the registry file provided by development by double-clicking on the file below to change the settings so that DCOM services will be enabled.
The substance of the registry file is as follows:
If the issue is widespread, then consider setting this registry key through a Group Policy Object or other means of automation.
If the issue involves a version pcAnywhere Solution 12.6 prior to SP2 (such as ITMS 7.1 with or without SP1), then it is possible to avoid this issue by:
1.installing ITMS 7.1 SP2; and
2.upgrading the pcAnywhere Agent to 12.6 SP2
A customer could first upgrade the ITMS server to SP2 (pcAnywhere Solution 12.6 SP2), and ensure that the Symantec Management Agent and pcAnywhere Agent on all managed computers are upgraded to the SP2 version. Once all managed computers are upgraded to agent version SP2, then it is possible to perform a successful uninstall of pcAnywhere without affecting DCOM services.
This behavior exists in the pcAnywhere box product up to version 12.5 build 442. It also exists in the following versions of pcAnywhere Solution: 7.0 and 7.1 SP1.
