The first method can be implemented into your Ghost image so that the restore process is uninterrupted. To automate the fix, proceed as follows from the computer that has the Ghost software installed:
- Open Ghost Explorer and open the image file you are trying to restore.
- Navigate to the following file and extract it to your desktop:
- Expand Windows
- Expand System32
- Click Config
- Drag "System" to the desktop
- (Note: Minimize Ghost Explorer but don't close it)
- Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start > Run > Regedit
- Highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- Click File > Load Hive
- Browse to the Desktop and open the "System" file you copied there.
- Provide a Key Name when prompted. The Key Name can be anything you like.
- Locate the new key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and expand it.
- Expand ControlSet001
- Expand Services
- Click Intelppm
- In the right pane, right-click the Start entry, and then click Modify
- In the Value data field, change the value to 4 and click OK
- Navigate back up and highlight the Key Name you established in Step 7
- Click File > Unload Hive...
- Inject the new hive into the image file open in Ghost Explorer:
- Restore your Ghost Explorer application window
- Drag the new "System" file into the same location you extracted it from.
- When prompted to replace the file, click Yes
- Click File > Compile
- Browse to a different location, provide a file name, and click Save
- After the image is recompiled, you should be able to restore the image to dissimilar hardware using the Deploy Anywhere feature.
If the 0x0000007E error message persists after taking these steps, you'll need to use the second method of resolution that is provided by Microsoft. The second method is a manual process that cannot be implemented into your Ghost task:
- Boot the computer with your Windows XP install disk
- At the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to boot into the Recovery Console
- Select the appropriate Windows installation when prompted to do so
- If prompted, type the local administrator password
- At the command prompt, type the following command:
- Type Exit
- When the computer reboots, it should boot into Windows XP Mini Setup Wizard.
