You want to know how to configure your SQL server to be used with dbconvert.
Using the SQL Server Enterprise Manager, create a new (empty) database.
Name the database ESMBD.
Leave the defaults at the Data Files and Transaction Log tab and click OK.
In the left pane, under the newly created ESMBD database, right-click Users > New Database User.
In the Login name drop down box click <new>.
Name the user esm_sec_officer.
Check SQL Server Authentication, and type in a password.
Under Defaults, in the Database drop-down box, select the earlier created ESMDB database.
On the Database Access tab, give all the rights to the esm_sec_officer user for the ESMDB database (you could possibly get away with less rights but for now it will do.)
Confirm the earlier entered password, and then click OK again.
Click Cancel to cancel the creation of another database user.
Under ESMDB click Tables. Notice that only the default tables exist.
Start the Query Analyser by clicking START > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server > Query Analyser.
Connect to the SQL server. (In this example it's WA-W2KSVR.)
In the drop down box select the earlier created ESMDB database. (Default is the Master database)
Click File > Open.
Browse to the create.sql file. This file comes with the installation of ESM Utilities and can normally be found at c:\program files\Symantec\esm utilities\mssql\create.sql
Click the Execute Query icon (a green arrow) to run the script and create and define the tables in the database.
Notice the <<< CREATED TABLE xxx >>> entries in the below pane. This indicates a successful run.
These entries can also be found within the SQL Server Enterprise Manager console.
The database is now created and initialised and a particular user, in this case “esm_sec_officer” has full rights to it. The next step is to run DBConvert and push some data to it.
To use DBConvert to push data to your database you need to install the ESM console and ESM Utilities, and then configure a ODBC connection in order to run DBConvert and push data to a database and run reports on the data. The installation of ESM Utilities and ESM Console are described in the ESM installation manual and will be no further discussed in this document.
To configure the ODBC connection to the ESMDB database
Select the earlier created and tested data source, esmdb.
Enter username and password for connecting to the SQL server's database.
Select a report and click the "generate report" icon (it looks like a sheet of paper with a magnifying glass).
A report is generated using the data from the SQL database.
Keep in mind that the dbconvert utility only pushes data to the database server. If an agent is removed from the ESM server's configuration, it will still show in the report. The dbconvert utility uses a one-way push, it is not capable of removing data from the database (its not a synchonization). The database should be cleaned by other means (SQL scripting).
Many companies use their own database query tools to extract data from the SQL server.
