The password for an ESM Console account has been forgotten and needs to be reset.
Symptoms A message indicating an incorrect password is presented when trying to login to the ESM console on a machine where a successful login of the same ID has been performed..
Currently, console passwords cannot be reset. Security for logging into the console is handled on the local machine and is part of the local console. The first choice is to enter a new login ID, whereby the console will prompt for a new password for this new account and will open, allowing attachment to ESM managers given the correct ESM manager account IDs and passwords (which are part of the ESM manager's own security). However the same account must be used to login to the console, then clear out the settings for the old login account (including the password) by doing the following:
Close the ESM console login screen.
Browse to the following directory (defaults shown) and delete the <console_login_id>
.mdb file: For ESM 6.5.x, C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec ESM Enterprise Console\Database For ESM 9.x and above, C:\Program Files\Symantec\Enterprise Security Manager\Symantec ESM Enterprise Console\Database WARNING: Only delete the one mdb file that begins with the login name that is locked out.
Open the window's registry using the regedit utility. Export the registry and save it as a backup
Browse to the following location in the registry: My Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Symantec\ESM\Console\Users.
In the USERS folder find the subfolder with the console login id. Delete that one folder.
Start the ESM console, and when prompted, enter the original login id and password. This will be considered as a new account, and when opened the user will be prompted to reattach to the ESM managers using the ESM manager login IDs and passwords. (Note: since the ESM Manager handles security for ESM accounts, if the ESM account and ESM Console account need to mirror one another, contact an ESM administrator to make the necessary changes to the ESM account once the change has been made to the ESM Console account.)
