After the error was thrown, it was found that the agent was not running and had to be manually started under "Services".
Application Metering Solution Agent is known to do this (6.0 version), and is fixed in the latest release, 6.1. of the product.
The Google Desktop and taskbar is known to contribute to this problem. Removing it and installing the very latest version is said to help as well.
If Application Metering is to be updated, some important things should be noted about the 6.1 release of Application Metering or the problem will not go away:
This newer release requires an updated version of Patch (relative to the 6.1 release of patch). The product should be installed therefore via Solution Center or all the necessary components may not be included. Several memory errors have been associated with a partial installation including a crash the client system.
Verify that the newer Metering subagent is installed on the client. If a previous version is still present, there may be an upgrade issue. Please read KB 29050 for a agent remove utility.
3. Nearly any 3rd party application that does Direct alterations to the way that the UI functions can prohibt the base Altiris Agent from installing.
