Unable to delete a Software Update Policy with many Update Advertisements.
Last Updated February 06, 2014
Created a Software Update Policy and added more than the recommended 50 Update Advertisements.
When trying to delete this policy, it requests confirmation of deleting. Clicked 'YES' and it hangs the Console.
When the Console comes back the Software Update Policy is still present.
With the large amount of Update Advertisements, this process times out.
While the amount of updates that can be included within a Software Update Policy are limitless; the count is directly impacted by the performance of the environment. The process will run and update the resource associations between the targeted client, the targeted filter, the Software Update and the Software Bulletin, and can be quite a heavy burden in the best environments.
This 'best practice' is outlined on KM: HOWTO56242 - Creating the Software Update Policy to deploy the packages; under the 'Caution' section.
Log onto the Notification Server, with Symantec / Altiris Service Account (Application Identity) credentials.
Drill down to C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server, and open the Web.Config file.
Note: this file is found on ITMS 7.1 SP1 systems at: C:\Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Web
Run a search on the doc for executionTimout (See screen shot below).
Edit the httpRuntime executionTimeout='600' manually. Change this to a higher integer, like '6000' for example. Then delete the bad Software Update Policy from the Console.
Advisory: Wait until the end of the day to run this, for it will suspend usage of the Console while completing, and may run for a long period of time.
