Ghost Error 1678: The following drives were not unmounted cleanly: <drive>
Last Updated April 13, 2017
When capturing or deploying an image using Ghost, the error "Error 1678: The following drives were not unmounted cleanly: C:" may be returned on the client computer (replace C: with any drive letter which may be causing the error).
There are a number of possible causes including, but not limited to, the following:
- The computer not being properly shut down.
- The drive not completing its shutdown process.
- Corruption of the hard drive (i.e. bad sectors).
The best practice is to verify that everything is in working order prior to capturing an image. Simple steps to do this include making sure the computer was properly shut down so the hard drive wasn't disconnected without being unmounted first, and run disk-checking utilities such as chkdsk (usage: chkdsk /f) to mark bad sectors and resolve other disk-related problems.
Additionally, adding the -batch command-line switch to the capture/distribute disk image task will prevent such messages from disrupting the imaging process.
