Symptoms When GhWalk32.exe is run to change a SID or Computer Name on a Windows 7 machine, Flash content in IE8 does not function and it is not possible to initiate a file download via the browser.
A growing number of third-party and Microsoft applications are taking their own private or derived copies of the computer name and SID and storing them in proprietary formats in registry and file locations, making them inaccessible to SID changes.
Microsoft only recognizes Sysprep as a supported mechanism for changing the computer SID. Due to Microsoft's best practice policy for SID changes, Symantec also recommends using the Microsoft Sysprep utility to perform SID changes.
This issue with IE8 is under investigation by Symantec Development and this article will be updated as needed.
If you only wish to change computer names without modifying the SID, here are some possible workarounds:
Run a vbscript. Documentation is available on the internet.
A customer had success with a 3rd party solution to change a Computer Name without changing the SID: "Workstation Name Changer." The application is called WSName.exe, version 2.88. The source and documentation is : http://mystuff.clarke.co.nz/MyStuff/wsname.asp.
