Error: "Failed to open mds: 10044, No such file or directory"

Mail processing suddenly stops on Symantec Brightmail Gateway (SBG) appliance after 4:02am local time.
Symptoms After an uptime of 30 or more days, SBG suddenly stops processing messages at 4:02am local time. Mail queues start to grow and you see following sequence of error messages repeatedly in maillog:
Failed to create mds Failed to open mds: 10044, No such file or directory Deferring message: failed to filter message
This is a known issue.
This issue has been resolved in Brightmail Gateway version 9.0.2.
