Issue/Introduction

You would like to find out if an email was delivered from the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) to a remote mail server using TLS encryption.

Resolution

In version 9.5 of the SMG, it will be possible to view this information in the message audit logs, by checking the delivery information of an email you have searched for.

For versions 8.0.X and 9.0.X of the SMG, this information is not available in the message audit logs, however can be checked using the following methods:

- You can check if an appopriate policy is setup to deliver emails to a remote host using TLS.  This can be verified in the section titled "Enabling TLS for all mail delivery" found in the knowledge base article TECH96523

- Next you can check the message headers of the email received by the recipient (if this can be obtained), which will verify if the remote mail server accepted the message using TLS. An example is shown below on what should be seen in the header.

Received: from mx1.testing.com (mx1.example.com [10.10.221.211])

(using TLS with cipher AES256-SHA (AES256-SHA/256 bits))
