When the customer installs the Altiris Agent on a client machine, it does not seem to receive a GUID and therefore is not able to update its configuration according to ClientPolicies or send a Basic Inventory to the NS server.
The Agent logs contain 'Empty response' errors from the CreateResource.aspx page, as follows:
The customer had implemented appliance web filtering across their sites, with all HTTP traffic being redirected to a local "Blue Coat" [content cache and filtering] appliance using the WCCP protocol on the complex's edge routers.
All of our other sites' traffic traverses their local Blue Coats in bridge mode which means there is no redirection. The problem site was not configured in this manner.
Following the diagnostic steps detailed in AKB #2016, no problems were discovered in the client site with the NS server and agent configurations.
The issue was resolved by the customer altering the z-CACHE-BYPASS acl in use by WCCP on the respective routers to prevent all traffic targeting the NS server from being redirected via WCCP (i.e. the Blue Coat content cache and filtering appliances).
