While attempting to reinstall the Remote Monitoring Server (RMS) on the Notification Server, or attempting to install the RMS to another machine, the checkbox for the Monitor Service under Add/Remove Services is grayed out.
The RMS has 3 dependencies which need to be met on the target machine prior to installing the Monitor Service: Credential Manager Agent install, Pluggable Protocols Architecture Agent (PPA Agent) install, and the Symantec Management Agent (SMA) must be the current version (does not require upgrade). If the PPA Agent is either not installed on the target machine, inventory stating that the PPA Agent is installed does not exist in the CMDB, or the SMA on the target machine is not the current / latest version, the option to install the Monitor Service (RMS) will be grayed out.
Follow these steps to ensure the prerequisites for the Monitor Service are met:
Altiris Pluggable Protocols Architecture Agent is listed as an installed plug-in/agent in the Symantec Management Agent Settings on the target machine.
If it is already installed, run the Delta update schedule from Settings > Notification Server > Resource Membership Update. If the Monitor Service checkbox is still grayed out, further troubleshooting will be necessary regarding inventory data in the CMDB.
If it is not installed, install it by running the following .msi from the Notification Server:
\\[NS server name]\nscap\bin\Win32\X86\PPA Agent Package\altiris_pluggableprotocols_agent_7_0_kb49812_sp5_x86.msi
Credential Manager Agent is properly installed on the target machine. To verify if the CM Agent is installed, check the following registry keys:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\CredentialManager\Creds (exists with child keys) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Altiris\CredentialManager\Keys (exists with child key)
If the CM Agent is not installed, add the target machine to the following rollout policy's target definition: Settings > All Settings > Monitoring and Alerting > Credential Settings > Credential Manager x86 Package Install. Update the SMA's configuration on the target machine to receive the CM Agent rollout policy.
Note: Do not remove the machine from the CM Agent rollout policy's target definition as this is required for the RMS to function properly.
Once the PPA Agent and CM Agent are confirmed to be installed, in the Symantec Management Agent Settings window, choose Send under Basic Inventory
Review the filter, Windows Computers Requiring Symantec Management Agent Upgrade, and ensure the target machine is not listed as a member. If it is listed, enable and apply the Symantec Management Agent for Windows - Upgrade to Symantec Management Agent 7.0 agent upgrade policy to the target machine.
Run a Delta update schedule
Attempt another install of the Monitor Service from: Settings > Notification Server > Site Server Settings > New > Site Server.
