During the Whole Disk Encryption process, the PGP Desktop software stops at a specific location on the hard drive and will not proceed from futher. An error may be given regarding read/write issues for the hard disk.
PGP Whole Disk Encryption is designed to encrypt each sector of the hard drive. PGP Whole Disk Encryption is also designed to stop if a bad sector is found on the hard drive and will not proceed further. This is to prevent any future issues that could occur due to a bad sector. Once the bad sector has been repaired, PGP Whole Disk Encryption can complete successfully.
1. Defragment Disk - Use the standard Windows Disk Defragmenter tool on the system to check for problems. Errors when attempting to encrypt your disk are often caused by bad sectors or errors on a hard disk. If your disk is seriously fragmented, PGP Corporation recommends that you defragment your disk prior to encryption using the Windows Disk Defragmenter.
Caution: For PGP Desktop 9.x, if you use an unsupported third-party defragmentation application (that is, not the built-in Windows defragmenter or PerfectDisk 7 from Raxco, Diskeeper 9 from Diskeeper Corp., or Power Defrag 3 from E-Technik), PGP Corporation recommends excluding the file PGPWDE01 from the defragmentation process, if the application allows it.
In rare cases, incorrect defragmentation of this file can cause boot problems. If the application allows, PGP Cororation reccomends the file PGPWDE01 to be excluded from the defragmentation process.
2. CHKDSK - This Windows tool will attempt to find and attempt to repair errors in the file system datd CHKDSK can also be used to locate bad sectors on the disk.
3. Third-party Disk Utilies - The Windows CHKDSK program may resolve the issue in some instances, but more comprehensive programs such as SpinRite from Gibson Research Corporation (http://www.grc.com) are often required. Software is available that can also perform check disk operations. Although running the regular Windows maintenance can fix many of these issues, sometimes these problems require third-party software such as SpinRite to repair. SpinRite can fix bad sectors on the hard drive that chkdsk cannot, thus allowing PGP Whole Disk Encryption to finish.
