The "tail -f update.log" CLI (Command Line Interface) command fails to show any activity while performing Software Update using the Control Center.
This behavior is by design.
Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) provides Enhanced user interface to upgrade to Symantec Messaging Gateway, giving feedback regarding the progression of software update download and installation in the Control Center. With this enhancement there is no need to view the update.log via CLI to watch the progress of Software Update.
However, you can still view the progress of Software Update via CLI using the "tail -f update.log" command. Please keep in mind that a new action, like clicking the "Download Only" or "Install" button, in Control Center causes the update.log file to roll over. During the roll over, older log entries are moved to a new file named update.log.<date and time stamp> and the current log entries are kept in update.log, causing the tail command to stop displaying the progress. Simply stop the tail command using CTRL+C and reissue the same command to continue watching the update.log.
Please note that you can also list and view the older update.log files (update.log.<date and time stamp>) using the "list --logs" and "cat <filename>" CLI commands.
