If real-time scanning is enabled and the files in question have a "HasStream" field, in the SQL Database for the SharePoint Server, equal to '1' SharePoint requires these files be scanned. This is assuming the file has not been scanned clean already, or that it previously scanned with an old set of virus definitions. In the situation where the Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers 5.1 service goes down, there will no longer be a scanner console for SharePoint to send scan requests. Causing these files to be blocked.
Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers 5.1.7 can permit SharePoint to display pages under these conditions even when the Scan Engine is not available. To use this solution upgrade to SPSS 5.1.7, then perform the following steps:
Open Registry Editor and go to the path “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\AVScanner”.
Create new “String Value” and type the Name: “ByPassExtensionOnOffline”.
Set the value of the new key “ByPassExtensionOnOffline” to “.aspx;.asmx”.
Restart IIS WebServices (ATTENTION: ALL IIS SERVICES WILL STOP THEN START) Run command: “iisreset”.
Note: Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers 5.1.7 is currently available.
WSS 3.0, MOSS 2007, with Symantec Protection for SharePoint Servers 5.1.6 or older.
