Alert notifications for Antivirus Filters where the filters are older than a set time interval are not being sent out consistently in Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG)
This behavior is by design.
The SMG has been designed not to send out unecessary alerts. Because the Antivirus Filters are usually updated once a day or several times a week, based on the their availability from Symantec, the filters on the SMG appliance will be in sync with the available filters that reside at the Symantec update website. When the Symantec filters get updated, the timestamp of filters on the appliance and the Symantec website will be compared, and if both sides are out of sync, the alert will be send out based on the settings under the Filters configuration tab. However, if both sets of filters are the same, then regardless of the settings on that configuration page, the alerts will not be sent out because the timestamp on both sets of filters will be the same.
When the time interval is set for "Virus filters are older than" on a SMG under Administration->Settings->Alerts, on the Alert Settings page, under the Filters tab, the alert notifications that are sent to the appliance administrators are not being sent out in a consistent manner.
Sometimes, there is one (1) alert per 24 hours. Some other times, there are no alerts at all. All the necessary xml files and database tables on the appliance contain correct information, but the alerts are still not being sent out in an expected manner, regardless of the time inverval set.
