Issue/Introduction

How to allow e-mail addresses to contain some non-ASCII characters, such as "%", "-", "+", and other 8-bit characters for Symantec Messaging Gateway appliances.

501 5.1.7 MAIL FROM: test% syntax error (percent sign %) not allowed

Resolution

In Symantec Messaging Gateway appliances, the web Graphical User Interface (GUI) has a configuration page where the appliance can be configured to allow e-mail addresses to contain the % character, 8-bit characters, such as "+", and to start an e-mail address with a dash "-".

The configuration page can be found under Protocols->Settings, on the "Settings" page, under the "Address Validation" section.  Each setting can be enabled with a check mark and disabled by removing a check mark and then clicking on the "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

The settings are:

  • Allow email addresses to contain the percent character
  • Allow email addresses to start with a dash
  • Allow 8-bit characters in e-mail addresses
