After migrating to a newer version of Symantec Endpoint Protection, you suddenly see entries in the Event log referring to an error pertaining to the Extend WG Protocol Driver because the specified file could not be found.
Symptoms Event ID 7000 in the event log: "The Extend WG Protocol Driver service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified."
This can occur if the location of the driver is not the same as the one indicated in the registry.
Verify whether the file exists either by navigating to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Symantec Endpoint Protection\ or C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\.
For 32-bit computers, the driver is WGX.SYS
For 64-bit computers, the driver is WGX64.SYS
Next, search the registry for references to that driver to see if the file path in the registry matches the actual file path.
If the actual file path differs from the path in the registry, edit the path in the registry to match the actual file path. Note: Always back up your registry prior to making changes.
