CMDB task "Assign Computer's Ownership to be the Primary User" fails to work
Last Updated February 19, 2014
When running the CMDB task "Assign Computer's Ownership to be the Primary User", this fails to work or assign the Asset Owner correctly to a computer resource.
The purpose of this task is to assign the Asset Owner to be the Primary User of a computer. Two different data classes are used to determine this as described below. Note: This task does not set the Primary User to be the Asset Owner, which it sometimes is incorrectly thought to do.
The Primary User (the Primary Account) data class. This is controlled by the Symantec Management Platform Agent's basic inventory. This value is calculated automatically based on what users in Windows uses a computer the most often during a calendar month. This appears when viewing a computer's Resource Manager window (right click on computer > Resource Manager), as shown in Figure 1.

The Asset Owners associated data class. This is controlled by CMDB Solution. This value can be manually set by a user, imported in by a Data Connector import rule, set by a CMDB rule and set by the Assign Computer's Ownership to be the Primary User task. This appears when editing a computer (right click on computer > Edit), as shown in Figure 2.

There are many areas that this task can fail at. These are broken down by subject into separate articles for conciseness.
