Some Emails with Open XML attachments, such as docx or xlsx, are triggering an Unscannable verdict for Maximum file size limit on the Symantec Messaging Gateway
Last Updated January 20, 2012
One or more Emails containing Open XML attachments, such as docx or xlsx, are not being received due to an Unscannable verdict being triggered. When checking the Message Audit Logs of the Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG) it is seen that this was due to a Maximum file size limit being breached.
The file/s attached to the original Email had the extension of either DOCX, XLSX or PPTX.
When the decomposer of the SMG uncompressed an Open XML file for scanning, the uncompressed file exceeded the configured Container Limit within the Symantec Messaging Gateway.
This is the expected behaviour when a configured Container limit has been breached.
Open XML files (such as DOCX, XLSX and PPTX) are compressed files and once uncompressed for scanning, will be substantially larger than their original file size.
To review the Container Limit settings, please consult your Symantec Messaging Gateway Administration Guide.
A possible workaround depending on the other policies employed on the system is to password protect the file before sending it, this will mean that the SMG will be unable to open and extract the file and hence the limit will not be met.
