Cannot open Symantec Messaging Gateway control center after installation in a VM enviornment

When opening the Symantec Messaging Gateway control center the browser cannot display the web page.
The gateway does not have any network connectivity and cannot ping the default gateway from the command line.
When the SMG starts you can see the following errors:

The Brightmail Gateway is designed to be installed on a virtual machine with the Guest OS settings set to Linux Other 32 bit. Guest OS settings other than Linux Other 32 bit are not fully supported with the Brightmail Gateway. Please refer to the Installation Guide on page 76 and 77 for more information.
Recreate the virtual machine with Guest OS settings set to Linux Other 32 bit.
