Failed liveupdate definition download results in definitions being 0.0.0.0 in Symantec Messaging Gateway
Last Updated October 12, 2012
The Symantec Messaging Gateway software has failed to acquire new virus definitions. Inspection of the virus definition date, post-failure, shows a date of 0.0.0.0.
No major error outside of 'liveupdate failed.'
If the rulesets failed to download and the version is 0.0.0.0 after the failure, this is usually indicative of corrupt antivirus rulesets. If there is a corrupt ruleset in place, that can interfere with ruleset acquisition.
You need to clear out the rulesets so that a non-corrupt ruleset can be acquired. Log into the command line of the Symantec Messaging Gateway device and run the following command:
When prompted, type yes.
This will restore the rulesets to the factory default settings. After this is finished, run another liveupdate to determine whether or not this fixes the problem. If the problem persists, contact Symantec Technical Support.
Telnet test in the command line of the messaging gateway to liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com on port 80 is successful in connecting.
