About updating Brightmail Antispam definitions from LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x or other local repository server
Last Updated October 29, 2013
This article describes whether or not it is possible to download Brightmail Antispam updates from an internal repository server. These updates are sometimes called "Premium AntiSpam" (PAS) updates.
By design, it is not possible to download Brightmail Antispam updates from a LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x (LUA 2.x) or any other internal repository.
LiveUpdate Administrator 2.x functions as an internal mirror to the contents of the LiveUpdate source servers on the Internet. Certified AntiVirus definitions and other non-spam updates are available through LUA 2.x for SMSDOM, SMSMSE, SMG and many other products. New AntiVirus definitions are typically updated once per day for mail security products. (Rapid Release definitions are made available approximately once per hour, but these are delivered by FTP rather than LiveUpdate.)
Brightmail updates are not downloaded via LiveUpdate, but through a different process which ensures that mail servers have signatures against the last spam messages in circulation. These updates are released by Symantec several times per hour. Internal caching of these signatures would be highly likely to result in out-of-date antispam protection rulesets, and diminish the effectiveness of the product.
One of the following products is used:
Symantec Messaging Gateway (SMG)
Symantec Message Filter
Premium Antispam enabled on Symantec Mail Security for Domino or Exchange (SMSMSE or SMSDOM)
